Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has unveiled a new map of the Strait of Hormuz showing areas it says is under its control, from the westernmost tip of Iran's Qeshm island to beyond the UAE's Emirate of Fujairah in the east. Iran's military has warned that US forces would be attacked if they entered the Strait.
Al Jazeera interviewed Foad Izadi, an associate professor at the University of Tehran, who argued that the Strait of Hormuz is not international waters but falls within Iran and Oman's territorial and contiguous waters, giving Iran legal authority.
Citing Article 51 of the UN Charter, he said Iran has the "right and responsibility" to shoot at enemy US warships passing through, adding "this is what Iran did today." He called the US naval blockade "an act of war" and accused Trump of "piracy" against Iranian ships, saying "we are dealing with the Epstein class." Izadi added that Iran can limit its nuclear program as it did in 2015 with extensive inspections, but cannot limit its missile program "because next time Israelis attack Iran, Iran needs these ballistic missiles to hit Tel Aviv and Haifa," and that Iran "cannot change its borders" or "give up its oil."
