The French government has collapsed after Prime Minister Michel Barnier was ousted in a no-confidence vote. MPs in the National Assembly voted overwhelmingly in support of the motion against him - just three months after he was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron.
Opposition parties had tabled the motion after the former Brexit negotiator controversially used special powers to force through his budget without a vote. It marks the first time the country's government has collapsed in a no-confidence vote since 1962.
The removal of Michel Barnier will increase France's current political instability after snap elections in the summer gave no single group a majority in parliament.
Barnier is now obliged to present the resignation of his government and the budget which was the cause of his downfall is defunct.
Both the far right and radical left had tabled motions of no-confidence after Barnier pushed through reforms to social security by invoking presidential decree on Monday after failing to win enough support for the measures.
The left-wing alliance New Popular Front (NFP), which won the most seats in the summer election had heavily criticised Macron’s decision to appoint the Michel Barnier as prime minister instead of its own candidate.

Russia has designated more than 150 news outlets, NGOs and charities as foreign agents.
Authorities say the law is no different from rules in other countries, aimed at organisations that get support from abroad. But critics say the law is being used to silence Russian independent media that refuse to tow the Kremlin's line.

After a month-long Canada Post strike amid labour disputes with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon, with the help of the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), has ordered the national mail service to resume its services next week.
"I am intervening today to make sure both parties have a solid foundation to resume negotiations and reach a mutual agreement as quickly as possible," MacKinnon said during a press conference on Friday, detailing the "timeout."
The Liberal minister further revealed that Canada Post's and CUPW's existing collective agreements will be extended until May 22, 2025, with an official report from an "Industrial Inquiry Commission" (IIC) — containing detailed findings and recommendations on a path forward — being required one week earlier.
"It is the government's responsibility to maintain industrial peace, and Canadians must be assured that their government will take all necessary actions to protect them," MacKinnon said. "It is not a decision I take lightly, but in this situation it is the right one," he added.
The strike saw approximately 55,000 Canada Post employees off the job and on the picket lines since Nov. 14. The result? Approximately 1 million packages being delayer per day ahead of the holiday season. MacKinnon says the negative impacts have been felt most by small businesses, charities, rural communities and Indigenous peoples.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened on Wednesday to “cut off” millions of American residents living in border states from Ontario’s energy exports as a response to U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s pledge of 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods.
“We’re sending a message to the U.S. — You come and attack Ontario, you attack [the] livelihoods of people of Ontario and Canadians. We're going to use every tool in our toolbox to defend Ontarians and Canadians across the border,” Ford said.
In response to a reporter’s question about Ford’s comments, Trump said Thursday that it was “fine” if the threat was followed through on.
“The United States is subsidizing Canada. It’s really a subsidy and we shouldn't have to do that,” Trump said. “I have so many friends in Canada, but we shouldn’t have to subsidize a country and we subsidize them for more than $100 billion a year.”
