The song's strongest message is the distinction between personal faith and the misuse of religion for power.

Lies In The Temple

[Intro]
[low vocal register]
They built a throne out of fear
Painted your name on the side
Told us the chains were a blessing
Sanctified what they hide

[Verse 1]
They pass the plate
Count the votes
Same dirty pockets
Same old coats
Smile in the pulpit
Hand on the flag
Bless every bullet
Fold every tag

They quote a verse
Twist the sound
Turn our prayers into battlegrounds
Say it’s holy while they steal our bread
Write their power in a book of red

[Chorus]
Lies in the temple
Lies in the pews
Using Your name like a weapon they use
God of the broken
God of the bruised
We call You higher than their excuse

Lies in the temple
Lies in the plan
Dressed up in scripture
Written by man
God of the orphan
God of the least
Tear down the throne of the self-made priest

[Verse 2]
They sell us fear on the evening show
Red and blue colors
Same gray smoke
Promise the poor a piece of the sky
Then lock the ladder and call it divine

They bless the wars
Curse the weak
Turn every prophet into a meme
We see the widows
We hear the groans
But they just polish their marble stones

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
[choir
Call-and-response]
Lead: Who you fighting for?
Choir: Not the hungry
Not the poor
Lead: Who you speaking for?
Choir: Just your donors
Just your door

Lead: You can’t hide it in a prayer
Choir: God already there
Lead: You can’t mask it with a hymn
Choir: Truth gonna break in

[crescendo]
Tear down the idols in our hearts
Tear down the idols in this state
If it don’t look like mercy
Love
It don’t carry Heaven’s weight

[Chorus]

[Outro]
[soft
Unison choir]
God of the grieving
We’re still believing
In a kingdom that don’t
Need their lies to keep breathing
