It has been a year since Captain Ibrahim Traore became the leader of Burkina Faso following a military coup. Upon assuming power, Captain Traore had set a goal of enhancing security and reclaiming control of areas occupied by armed groups in the West African country.
Militant attacks have caused thousands of deaths while more than two million people have been displaced in Burkina Faso since 2015 when the violence spilled over from neighbouring Mali and Niger. Traore had promised to reverse the trend in a few months.
By the end of August 2023, the government announced the successful return of over 190,000 of those displaced to their original communities. But the security situation remains precarious.
Captain Traore himself has said ''we are at war'' referring to the violence. He suggested the insecurity could prevent the country from conducting elections scheduled for next year.
He told journalists on his one year anniversary that the elections were ''not a priority'' and that the was ensuring security to ensure candidates are able to travel across the country to campaign.
Although under the transitional plan he was not expected to contest in the election, he hinted at changing the constitution - which could allow him to stand in the elections.
This is coming amid deteriorating relations between Burkina Faso and its former colonial ruler, France with France. The West African country under Traore's junta expelled French troops in February 2023. The junta is strengthening ties with Russia, a major Western rival.
One major decision taken by Burkina Faso along with neighbouring Mali and Niger - both also led by military rulers - is the signing of a mutual defence pact known as the Alliance of Sahel States as anti-French sentiment grows across the region.
So how has Burkina Faso fared in Traore's first year as leader?

Unraveling Jamaica's Rich History: The Story of a Resilient Nation
Welcome to Thriving Threads! In this captivating journey, we explore the rich and resilient history of Jamaica-a land that has captivated the world with its vibrant culture, enduring strength, and iconic figures. From the early days of the Taíno people to the fiery rebellion of leaders like Marcus Garvey, Sam Sharpe, and Paul Bogle, this video dives deep into the stories that have shaped Jamaica into the unique and inspiring nation it is today.
Discover the Roots of Jamaica
Our journey begins with the first settlers of the island: the Taíno people. We explore how their culture and connection to the land left a legacy that echoes in Jamaican identity today. As we delve deeper, we encounter the enslaved Africans who were brought to Jamaica and endured unimaginable hardships under colonial rule. From their struggles arose a spirit of resistance that continues to define Jamaicans across the globe.
The Maroons: Guardians of Freedom
One of the most remarkable chapters of Jamaican history is the story of the Maroons. These brave warriors-escaped slaves who fled into the rugged hills-formed autonomous communities and defied colonial forces. Under legendary leaders like Nanny of the Maroons, their strategic brilliance and unyielding resolve earned them peace treaties and a place in history as symbols of freedom and resistance.
Marcus Garvey and the Call for Pan-Africanism
Fast forward to the 20th century, and we meet Marcus Mosiah Garvey, one of Jamaica's most influential figures. Garvey's visionary Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) championed racial pride, economic independence, and the dream of returning to Africa. His Back-to-Africa movement and global impact made him a cornerstone of Pan-Africanism. Though controversial in his time, Garvey's ideas shaped future generations and earned him the title of Jamaica's first National Hero.
The Rise of Rastafari and Bob Marley
Influenced by Garvey's teachings, the Rastafari movement emerged in the 1930s, blending spirituality, African pride, and resistance against colonial oppression. The movement gained worldwide recognition through Bob Marley, whose reggae music brought Jamaica's message of love, unity, and defiance to millions. Marley remains an enduring cultural ambassador, representing the soul of Jamaican identity.
From Rebellion to Independence
Jamaica's journey to independence in 1962 was marked by countless acts of courage and determination. Figures like Sam Sharpe and Paul Bogle led uprisings that challenged the oppressive colonial system, paving the way for political freedom. The 1938 labor riots catalyzed the formation of political parties like the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP), spearheaded by leaders like Norman Manley and Alexander Bustamante.
Jamaican Identity: Out of Many, One People
Today, Jamaica's motto, "Out of Many, One People," celebrates its diversity and unity. The island's culture-reflected in its music, language (Patois), cuisine, and sports-continues to inspire people worldwide. Jamaica's history is not just about survival; it's about thriving against all odds.
Join Us on This Journey

Jamaica's assets are being sold off by its own government, piece by piece, and China is becoming a major player in this quiet takeover." From beloved symbols like Air Jamaica to critical infrastructure, Jamaica's essential assets are slipping into foreign hands, raising urgent questions about who truly owns this island nation. In this eye-opening documentary, we delve into the trend of selling off Jamaica's key resources to the highest bidder, uncovering the lasting impacts of these deals on national pride, sovereignty, and economic stability.
Jamaica's journey of foreign ownership starts with Air Jamaica, a former national airline that symbolized Jamaican independence and pride. But financial troubles led the government to sell it off, stripping away a cherished icon of national identity. The story continues with the country's major airports-Norman Manley and Sangster International-now leased to foreign corporations. These airports, Jamaica's main points of entry, have brought modernization but are now under the control of companies from Mexico and Spain. What does this mean for a nation so heavily reliant on tourism? Who truly benefits when foreign interests control Jamaica's gateways?
The trend doesn't stop there. Jamaica's ports, specifically the Kingston Freeport Terminal, were initially leased to a French company but are now controlled by China Merchants Port Holdings Company. This shift is part of China's growing influence in the Caribbean, making Jamaica a significant piece in China's global strategy. With Jamaica's main port now under Chinese control, what does this mean for the island's autonomy in managing its own trade and resources?
Jamaica Public Service (JPS), the island's sole electricity distributor, is also in foreign hands, primarily controlled by Marubeni Corporation of Japan and Korea East-West Power. This foreign ownership impacts electricity rates, infrastructure, and policies on renewable energy, with decisions made far from Jamaican shores. For the average Jamaican, foreign-controlled power means high electricity rates and limited control over the island's essential services. When critical decisions affecting daily life are made outside Jamaica, who's looking out for the local population?
And finally, we explore Jamaica's bauxite and alumina industry, a natural resource that's been one of Jamaica's most valuable assets. Major portions of this industry are now controlled by foreign corporations, including Russia's UC Rusal and China's Jiuquan Iron & Steel Company (JISCO). While these deals have brought economic gains, they have also handed over control of Jamaica's land and minerals to outsiders, affecting local communities, the environment, and the economy's long-term stability.
In this video, we address pressing questions: How much of Jamaica is truly Jamaican-owned? Who benefits from these foreign investments? And most importantly, what will be left for future generations if this pattern of foreign dependence continues?
Join us as we uncover the realities behind Jamaica's foreign-owned assets and the implications for the island's future. This documentary reveals the hidden side of foreign investment in Jamaica, from airports and ports to electricity and natural resources. Each sale raises the stakes, making Jamaica's sovereignty seem like a dwindling dream. If you're curious about how China's influence extends beyond Jamaica's ports, don't miss our related video on China's gradual economic colonization of the Caribbean.
