For more than fifteen years the extremist group Al Shabaab has been fighting a bloody insurgency in Somalia.

Now, as President Biden redeploys American troops to the country, are the group winning the fight?

Formed in 2002, by 2008 they controlled much of southern Somalia.

They soon pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda and began conducting attacks at home and abroad.

In September 2013 they killed nearly 70 people in the Westgate shopping mall attack in Kenya's capital Nairobi.

Then again in Kenya in April 2015 Al Shabaab militants killed 148 people at Garissa University College.

Back home in the Somali capital Mogadishu they carried out their most deadly attack in October 2017, killing more than five hundred people in a massive truck bombing.

In the years that have followed, the group's attacks have become routine.

They often kill dozens of civilians a month, as they battle the African Union troops there to try and keep them at bay.

Now emboldened by the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan following the US withdrawal, the group are cementing control of their territory, with the aim to take the whole country and implement strict Sharia law.

At the moment, Al Shabaab control vast swathes of central and southern Somalia but their reach spreads far further, with Somali government control diminishing.

Our correspondent Jamal Osman obtained rare access to film in Al Shabaab territory and travelled to their de facto capital Jilib.

Türkiye has successfully brokered a landmark declaration between Ethiopia and Somalia. It follows a year-long dispute between the two countries over access to the sea.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated the leaders of Somalia and Ethiopia on the historic breakthrough, which marks a new chapter in their bilateral relations.

I can't believe I'm in Somalia's capital of Mogadishu. It has essentially been the most dangerous city in the world for the last 3 decades, due to the ongoing Civil War which began started in 1991. Tourism is almost nonexistent, and if you do come, then you must take precautions and follow the rules given to you at all times.

BUT once I have looked past all the military checkpoints and I've gotten over my initial anxiety of being here, I am seeing an amazing culture with some of the kindest people I've ever met. And shall we talk about the beaches? Somalia has the longest coastline in Africa with some of the most stunning coastlines I've ever seen!

By mid-2023, as many as half a million children under the age of five could die, says the United Nations. It’s warning of a humanitarian disaster unless an urgently needed one billion U.S. dollars in aid money arrives in time. Among the causes are climate change, food prices driven sky-high by the war in Ukraine, and an economy devastated by decades of internal conflict, the Covid-19 pandemic and Islamist terrorism. Mariel Müller reports from Baidoa in southwestern Somalia, the region hit hardest by the famine.

Egypt Sends Weapons To Somalia, Tensions Escalate With Ethiopia | Firstpost Africa

Tensions between the Horn of Africa neighbours Ethiopia and Somalia are worsening further. Ethiopia has raised concerns as two of its rivals- Mogadishu and Cairo forge closer partnerships. Egypt has delivered its first military aid to Somalia in more than four decades. This comes after both nations signed a security pact earlier this month. Egypt has also offered to send troops to a new peacekeeping mission in Somalia, to fight Islamist terror group al Shabab. The new mission is due to replace an African Union peacekeeping force in January which also includes up to 10,000 Ethiopian troops. However, Mogadishu had threatened to kick out the Ethiopian troops due to a dispute over a port deal Ethiopia signed with Somalia's breakaway region Somaliland in January. Somalia and Ethiopia have reached a deal in Ankara to end a year-long bitter dispute over a port agreement with the breakaway Somaliland region. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described it as a ‘historic reconciliation’. Negotiators are now expected to hold technical talks by February next year, with a four-month deadline to work out an agreement that would respect Somalia's territorial integrity while granting landlocked Ethiopia access to the Red Sea. In Nigeria, a survivor turned activist is campaigning to keep women and girls safe in the digital space and bring perpetrators to justice.reach.

At least 32 people were killed in a suicide attack carried out by al-Shabab militants at a popular beachfront location in the Somali capital, a police spokesman said on Saturday.

Abdifatah Adan Hassan from the Somali Police Force said around 63 people were also wounded, some of them critically.

Video footage showed a number of bodies and injured people in Mogadishu's Abdiaziz district.

Al-Shabab controls large parts of southern and central Somalia. The group is affiliated to al-Qaeda and has waged a brutal insurgency for nearly 20 years against the UN-backed government in Somalia.

Germany & Somalia Agree to Deport Undocumented Somalis From Germany | Firstpost Africa

Germany has struck a deportation pact with Somalia. Under the deal, Germany will deport undocumented Somali immigrants back to the East African nation. This comes after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz earlier this week. The leaders have agreed to boost the number of Somali migrants deported without legal status. A total of 65,000 Somalis currently live in Germany and Chancellor Scholz said the pact will only affect a handful of people convicted of serious crimes. While the Somali government has agreed to receive the migrants it also urged Germany against forced deportation. Watch the video for more details.

In 1993 Lieutenant James Lechner, a member of the 3rd Ranger Battalion, was selected for a top secret special operations task force being sent to Mogadishu, Somalia, to capture the insurgent leader Mohamed Farah Aideed. Deep in the enemy's stronghold, the small group of Rangers and special operators now find themselves fighting not only to rescue the downed helicopter's crewmen, but also to save their own lives.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Ethiopia against taking steps to implement a controversial port deal it brokered with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 1, Somaliland leased landlocked Ethiopia 20km (12 miles) of its coastland around the port of Berbera, on the Gulf of Aden, for 50 years for military and commercial purposes.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Mohamud said Ethiopian assets would have to cross into Somalia’s territory in order to reach the leased area and warned Addis Ababa against taking such a step.
“So far Ethiopians haven’t come into Somalia. If they will, then that will be a problem at a different level,” Mohamud said.
