Correspondent Ben Anderson goes to Burkina Faso, where one of Africa’s fastest-growing humanitarian crises spins out of control as the Sahel becomes the new epicenter of terrorism and violence.

This segment is from the show ‘VICE’ which originally aired in May 2020.

Since the broadcast, Burkina Faso has experienced two separate military coups, and over two million of its citizens have fled while roughly 40% of the country remains under the control of non-state armed groups.

The History of Burkina Faso
The history of Burkina Faso is a fascinating journey through the rise and fall of powerful empires, colonial rule, and a quest for independence and self-determination. The region that is now Burkina Faso was once inhabited by ancient civilizations, including the Mossi, Lobi, and Gurunsi, who established prosperous kingdoms and cultural legacies.
In the 19th century, European colonial powers began exerting influence over the area. The French established control over the region, known as French Upper Volta, in the 1958. During colonial rule, the people of Burkina Faso faced exploitation and resistance against oppressive policies.
The quest for independence intensified in the mid-20th century, and on August 5, 1960, Burkina Faso (then known as Upper Volta) gained independence from French colonial rule. Subsequent years witnessed a series of political changes, with periods of military rule and democratic transitions shaping the nation's trajectory.
In 1984, the country's name was changed to Burkina Faso, meaning "Land of Incorruptible People," symbolizing a commitment to national unity and progress. Since then, Burkina Faso has faced various challenges, including political instability and security threats, but the spirit of resilience and determination continues to shape the nation's path towards a brighter future. As Burkina Faso strives to build a prosperous and harmonious society, it honors its historical roots while embracing the opportunities of the present.

Burkina Faso Accuses France, Benin and Ivory Coast of Destabilization | Firstpost Africa

Burkina Faso's military leader Ibrahim Traore has accused France of destabilizing his country. He said he has evidence of destabilization orchestrated against Burkina Faso by France, with the support of West African nations Benin and Ivory Coast. Traore accused Benin of hosting "two French bases", which he says were a "centre of operations for the terrorists" who regularly strike Burkina Faso. He aso claimed Ivory Coast was hosting "a centre of operations to destabilise" Burkina Faso. France has denied the accusations.

West Africa Bloc ECOWAS Offers Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso 6 Months to Rethink Exit | Firstpost Africa

West African leaders met in Nigeria's capital Abuja for the ECOWAS summit on Sunday. This gathering was seen as another desperate effort by the pro-west bloc to rebuild the broken ties. ECOWAS is a 15-member West Africa’s main political and economic group. However, three nations have announced that they are no longer part of the group. They are Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, all ruled by military governments. In January this year, they announced their withdrawal from the bloc after forming their own Alliance of Sahel States (AES). At the summit in Abuja, the member states approved the official withdrawal date as January 29. But in some last-ditch efforts, they extended the timeline to July 29. The bloc hopes to use the six-month transition period to convince the countries to return. Watch for more.
