Egypt Sends Weapons To Somalia, Tensions Escalate With Ethiopia | Firstpost Africa
Tensions between the Horn of Africa neighbours Ethiopia and Somalia are worsening further. Ethiopia has raised concerns as two of its rivals- Mogadishu and Cairo forge closer partnerships. Egypt has delivered its first military aid to Somalia in more than four decades. This comes after both nations signed a security pact earlier this month. Egypt has also offered to send troops to a new peacekeeping mission in Somalia, to fight Islamist terror group al Shabab. The new mission is due to replace an African Union peacekeeping force in January which also includes up to 10,000 Ethiopian troops. However, Mogadishu had threatened to kick out the Ethiopian troops due to a dispute over a port deal Ethiopia signed with Somalia's breakaway region Somaliland in January. Watch this report to understand the complex rivalry ongoing in East Africa.

Somalia has one of the highest rates of violent deaths in the world, and it's a name associated only with hardshipโconflict, famine, chaos. But the media does not show you the artists, the innovators, the younger population pulling together amidst it all. The real Somalia is more than you think, and its spirit is anything but broken.

In this Episode of the Wide Awake Podcast I spoke to Gabriel Du Preez also known as Tokkie. Tokkie was born in Feitas which is a suburb in Johannesburg. In 2010 he was introduced to one of south Africa's most successful music groups, Die Antwoord by filmmaker Ben Jay Crossmen.
He was adopted by Yolandi Visser and Ninja when he was nine years old along with his younger sister Meisie. Their older brother was not adopted and remained in Fietas with his mother.
Tokkie believes that Die Antwoord adopted him solely because of the way he looks and that it was all part of their image.
After spending many years with the musical group and appearing in some of their most successful music videos titled โI Fink U Freaky and Ugly Boy' Tokkie has been completely cut off and is now living back in Fietas with his older brother. His sister remains in their custody.

As a child, I had three dreams. First, I wanted to sing and record musicโand I did that. Second, I aspired to become a radio DJโand I proudly achieved that as well. The third dream was to visit Ghana, a land I always felt drawn to. I can now say with joy that I finally made that dream a reality, and the moment I set foot on Ghanaian soil at Kotoka International Airport in Accra was indescribable. It was a moment of fulfillment, gratitude, and connection to something much bigger than myself.
Ghana welcomed me with open arms and a spirit of hospitality that felt like coming home. The vibrant city of Accra buzzed with lifeโcolorful markets, joyful music, and delicious street food creating an atmosphere of celebration. From there, my journey unfolded like a beautiful tapestry, rich with history and cultural significance.
Beyond the landmarks, it was the people who left the deepest impression. Their warmth, pride, and vibrant spirit radiated through every conversation, every smile, and every handshake. I felt deeply connected to their joy and resilience.
Ghana nourished my soul in ways I never imagined. This journey was not just about crossing off a lifelong goal; it was about embracing my heritage, finding meaning in the past, and celebrating life in the present. Dreams do come trueโand Ghana was the dream that made all the others feel complete.

In 1993 Lieutenant James Lechner, a member of the 3rd Ranger Battalion, was selected for a top secret special operations task force being sent to Mogadishu, Somalia, to capture the insurgent leader Mohamed Farah Aideed. In early October, after conducting a number of raids in the city, the Task Force is called upon to conduct a daring daylight mission into the heart of Aideed's territory. During the raid, one of the Black Hawk helicopters is shot down and Lechner and his comrades are soon caught up in the fiercest combat involving US forces since the Vietnam War. Deep in the enemy's stronghold, the small group of Rangers and special operators now find themselves fighting not only to rescue the downed helicopter's crewmen, but also to save their own lives.
