After a month-long Canada Post strike amid labour disputes with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon, with the help of the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), has ordered the national mail service to resume its services next week.

"I am intervening today to make sure both parties have a solid foundation to resume negotiations and reach a mutual agreement as quickly as possible," MacKinnon said during a press conference on Friday, detailing the "timeout."

The Liberal minister further revealed that Canada Post's and CUPW's existing collective agreements will be extended until May 22, 2025, with an official report from an "Industrial Inquiry Commission" (IIC) — containing detailed findings and recommendations on a path forward — being required one week earlier.

"It is the government's responsibility to maintain industrial peace, and Canadians must be assured that their government will take all necessary actions to protect them," MacKinnon said. "It is not a decision I take lightly, but in this situation it is the right one," he added.

The strike saw approximately 55,000 Canada Post employees off the job and on the picket lines since Nov. 14. The result? Approximately 1 million packages being delayer per day ahead of the holiday season. MacKinnon says the negative impacts have been felt most by small businesses, charities, rural communities and Indigenous peoples.

And just as Ghana bears the marks of colonialism, many parts of the Americas, Europe and elsewhere also carry proof of aspects of the culture of the enslaved Africans, who until their sojourn, knew no other way of life.
From the Ancestral River Park at Assin Manso in the Central Region, the story is told, for example, of how the Caribbean country of Jamaica was named by Akan slaves.

What can I say except I’m filled with gratitude? To have the opportunity to perform a brand new arrangement of the National Anthem I created along with my talented brother and musical genius, Rouaj Shirley, on Independence Day yesterday at the National Stadium at Grand Gala - the biggest annual event Jamaica stages for the world to see - is something I will FOREVER be proud of!!!

Arranging this was no easy feat. We worked for 3 months to get it just right. I wanted to honour the original composition whilst finding new creative ways to make it fresh and exciting, and I think we did just that. Pitching this on my own to the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (the public body responsible for all national cultural events) was VERY intimidating at first, but they welcomed it and I’m very grateful to them for trusting me with this amazing task.

A VERY special thanks to my AMAZINGLY TALENTED friend Julianne who designed my look and to the great Cavell for making it a reality in less than a week!

And I absolutely CANNOT forget my people!! All these background singers are my friends - including my actual brother - who said yes long before I finished asking them to sing with me! They’ve all been a part of my journey and I couldn’t do this without them. Sharing the stage with them was electric!!

For several months, from the Seychelles Islands to the Somali coast, Olivier Joulie went to meet fishing bosses, soldiers and even pirates... His very detailed investigation betrays the disarray that reigns in a region where fish catches are multiplying hostages.

Covering two million square kilometers, from the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of Aden, the area has become one of all dangers. In 2009, more than two hundred ships were victims of acts of piracy there. Giant oil tankers, cruise ships or fishing boats, no building is safe. In Port Victoria, the crews of Spanish tuna boats do not hide their concern. Barring a miracle, they will have to rely only on themselves to repel the pirate attacks. This is no longer the case for their French colleagues. The owners of the nine fishing boats engaged in the region ended up putting their hands in their pockets. For an amount estimated at 2.5 million euros, they now ensure the presence on board of around sixty marines.

Men ready for anything
In order to secure the region, Europe set up Operation Atalanta in 2008. A device engaging frigates and patrol aircraft. Protection considered, by many, insufficient. Especially since, entering Somalia, and particularly in Puntland, Olivier Joulie realizes that the lure of profit is pushing more and more Somalis towards delinquency. They sometimes obtain millions of euros to free the ships they have taken control of. The causes of the explosion of this maritime crime are crystal clear for Sayid Aden Cade, the mayor of the village of Hobyo: "Intensive fishing by large foreign boats destroys wildlife. They draw on our natural resources and the fish are gradually disappearing . Our fishermen, with their simple nets, do not have the means to fight and they are becoming more and more poor..." No reason in sight for the pirates to soon put away their skiffs and their Kalashnikovs...
