When I arrived in Burkina Faso's capital of Ouagadougou yesterday, I was not planning to touch a living crocodile. But I did. And it was absolutely one of the scariest, most thrilling moments of my life.

Burkina Faso: Ibrahim Traore's Military Govt Says Foiled Fresh Coup Attempt | Firstpost Africa

Burkina Faso's military government says it has foiled a fresh coup attempt led by a formal army official. The junta says several people have been arrested in connection with the plot trying to destabilise the country. The junta has blamed a former high-ranking military official Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba for leading the plot. Damiba took charge as Burkina Faso's interim president after ousting a democratically-elected leader in a coup in 2022. But in less than a year, he was himself overthrown in another coup which was led by the current military chief Ibrahim Traore. Burkina Faso's military government has given French troops one month to leave the country. That is according to state media.
French forces are in the West African nation as part of a campaign to drive out rebel groups.
The UN estimates thousands of people have been killed since 2015 and nearly three million displaced by violence linked to various fighters.
Demonstrations against the French soldiers' presence have been held in the capital, Ouagadougou.

"Russia is family for Africa," declared the president of Burkina Faso at the Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg.

He called on African states to oppose Western imperialism: “The slave that cannot carry out its own revolt does not deserve to be pitied.”

From an army captain to Africa's youngest leader, Ibrahim Traore catapulted himself to the highest office in his country, Burkina Faso, after seizing power in a military coup in 2022.

Traore's previously unknown face is now plastered on portraits in the capital Ouagadougou and in many parts of West Africa with many comparing him with Burkina Faso's revered revolutionary leader, Thomas Sankara, who was assassinated in 1987.

This is coming as the new wind of pan-Africanism and anti-French sentiments appears to be blowing fast in West Africa.

Young military officers like Traore have promised to end ties with France fueling the anti-French feelings and raising hopes for many citizens who say the former colonial power has not helped matters in the region regarding security and economy.

There have been debates over the growing relationship between Russia's former French colonies amid the uncertainty in the region.

Captain Traore has been clear on his desire for ties with Russia.

Soldiers in Burkina Faso have detained the president in the latest military coup attempt.

That follows a day of unrest and gunfire near President Roch Kabore's residence.

The military is angry at the government's failure to stop attacks by armed groups such as ISIL and Al Qaeda.
