In this episode of the Wide Awake Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dariusz Dziewanski. Dariusz is an experienced researcher, journalist, and author who has dedicated fifteen years to international development and humanitarian work.

He specialises in research, monitoring, evaluation, and learning, with his main focus on gangs. His extensive academic research has resulted in the publication of a book titled "Gang Entry and Exit in Cape Town: Getting Beyond The Streets in Africa’s Deadliest City," as well as numerous articles in esteemed peer-reviewed journals.

During our conversation, we delved into Dariusz's journey of working with gangs in South Africa and explored why Cape Town holds the unfortunate distinction of being Africa's deadliest city. We discussed the Cape Flats and examined the most influential gangs in South Africa. Additionally, we explored the reasons behind individuals joining gangs and the various pathways they take to exit such environments. Dariusz also shared an insane story about a lone gangster engaged in an extraordinary battle and much more…

Description:

Between 1889 and 1930 there were around 3,700 known lynchings in the US. The perpetrators ranged from single people to small mobs to huge crowds of 15,000. The reasons given were broad. While most were accused of murder of rape, many were lynched for simply being rude, for arguing, for taking the wrong job or having the wrong beliefs.

Like during Holocaust, as I explored in a previous video, these were ‘ordinary men’ and women, and often even children.

And as in my exploration of the psychology of the perpetrators' Holocaust, I want to try and understand the factors that led both to the violence of lynchings, but also ask how ordinary Americans justified their racism more broadly.

I want to use lynchings to try and examine racism more broadly, taking an action, an event, and slowly zooming outwards, looking at the psychological, sociological, and historical conditions that led to it.

We’ll look at a number of what I’ll describe in as ‘justifications, rationalizations, or causes’ – to try to understand what led to violence, and how the beliefs, attitudes, and psychologies of perpetrators were produced more broadly.

We’ll look at propaganda, sexuality, scientific racism, nostalgia, economics, stereotypes, and first, the power of a feeling of defeat and victimhood, on the part of whites.

This video dives into the shocking case of a Jamaican couple, Jadion Richards and Akwele Lawes-Richards, who were arrested in the United States for allegedly masterminding a $1 million organized retail theft ring targeting Lululemon stores across the country. The Jamaican couple, originally from Jamaica but now living in Connecticut, are accused of stealing high-end merchandise from stores in Colorado, Minnesota, New York, Connecticut, and Utah. The story of this Jamaican couple arrested in the US has sparked conversations about cultural perception, societal pressures, and the ripple effects of crime on immigrant communities.

Jadion Richards and Akwele Lawes-Richards, the Jamaican couple in the United States, are facing charges of organized retail theft under a new Minnesota law introduced in 2023. This law addresses the growing issue of retail crime rings, and if convicted, the couple could face up to 15 years in prison. The Jamaican couple is alleged to have operated a complex scheme, stealing goods from one Lululemon store, exchanging them for receipts at another, and then returning the items for cash. Police found over $50,000 worth of stolen merchandise in their hotel room during their arrest. This was just the tip of the iceberg, as the investigation revealed the Jamaican couple’s activities netted nearly $1 million in stolen goods.

The actions of this Jamaican couple arrested in the US have cast a spotlight on organized retail theft, a problem that costs retailers billions of dollars each year. Beyond the crime itself, this case raises questions about the pressures faced by immigrants, including Jamaican couples in the United States, who may feel driven to maintain a certain lifestyle. Social media often fuels these pressures, creating a false image of success that some strive to emulate, even at great personal cost.

This story isn’t just about the Jamaican couple arrested in the US—it’s about the impact on the Jamaican diaspora and how incidents like this can perpetuate harmful stereotypes. Jamaicans are known for their resilience and hard work, and the actions of this Jamaican couple do not represent the entire community. However, stories like this can create a ripple effect, influencing how Jamaicans and Black immigrants are perceived in the United States.

Watch this video to uncover the full story of Jadion Richards and Akwele Lawes-Richards, the Jamaican couple in the United States, and how their alleged actions have far-reaching consequences. Let us know your thoughts in the comments. How do we balance understanding with accountability, and what lessons can we learn from this Jamaican couple’s arrest in the US?
